A young woman’s journey to reconnect to her Afro roots, this play honors the life and music of Afro-Cuban composer Arsenio Rodriguez. His musical innovations led to the creation of salsa in the south of the Bronx.
Developed by ID Studio Theater. Written by Toby Campion; co-directed by Germán Jaramillo & Leyma López; choreography by Daniel Fetecua; composition, arrangements and musical production by Pablo Mayor, production and direction assistant: Ximena Zuluaga, artistic design by Hersilia Restrepo, videography by Nicole Fernández. Hotel de Vagabundos (The Vagabond Hotel)
This award-winning play was written in 1955 by the Afro-Colombian doctor, anthropologist and writer, Manuel Zapata Olivella. It offers a unique look at race-relations in 1940’s New York City, from the perspective of a Black, Latino immigrant.

Esta premiada obra fue escrita en 1954 por el médico, antropólogo y escritor afrocolombiano Manuel Zapata Olivella. Ofrece un visto único a las relaciones raciales en la ciudad de Nueva York de 1940, desde la perspectiva de un inmigrante negro latino.

Lost Children: a Piece in Twenty Questions" is a monologue adapted from the Spanish version of "Tell Me How It Ends: an Essay in Forty Questions" (National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist) by Valeria Luiselli, based on her experiences working as a volunteer translator for migrant children seeking legal representation. The adaptation includes interviews with young migrants who are part of Unidad Latina en Acción (ULA), who have bravely shared their experiences as unaccompanied minors traveling to the US, after a longstanding collaboration with ID Studio. Set in the homeland of author Washington Irving, UNTOLD TALES recounts the journey of a local immigrant: the Headless Horseman. His long-lost head, a “no body,” tells his story of 243 years wandering in search of his body and ultimately finding hope, love, and identity at the end of a painful journey. This multidisciplinary production of music, dance, and theater is inspired by the stories of immigrants living in the greater New York area, woven together by a comical yet poignant theatrical narrative based on Irving’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

One year after New York City’s arts and cultural sector shut down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, events in each NYC borough will mark the somber anniversary. Comprising speeches by local elected/cultural leaders and performances by New York artists, this day of programming memorializes the shutdown while looking forward to the needs of a resilient NY artistic community. The events are united by the dual themes of #CultureRemembers and #CultureForward, and will take place on Thursday, March 18, and Friday, March 19.

“DANCE TO EMBRACE”: A DANCE SERIES PRESENTED AT “GIVING LIGHT” EXHIBIT AT BRONX ART SPACE

New York (February 28th, 2021) - Daniel Fetecua Productions with support of iD Studio Theater invites you to the event "Dance to Embrace". These three evenings of dance performances will be part of the Giving Light Event presented by Beverly Emers at Bronx Art Space. "Dance to Embrace" is composed of three dance works “Bella Vista Project”, “Holding for Embrace” and “The Tongue of The Flame” produced and conceived by Daniel Fetecua, an acclaimed choreographer and performer who mines his identity and experiences to create multidisciplinary performances.
Dance to Embrace takes place from Thursday, March 25th to Saturday, March 27th, at Bronx Art Space at 7:30 p.m. each day. The performances will be for a safely distanced audience of no more than 20 people and masks will be required. You can visit this website. Click here.

ID Studio Theater, in collaboration with Unidad Latina en Acción, hosted a semi-private premiere of “Los niños perdidos” in New Haven, CT. It was a moving evening with young migrants, who are part of the production’s projections, celebrated and got to experience the play live while engaging with community members in socially-distant, meaningful dialogue about their experiences.

Unspoken Tales of Sleepy Hollow
Rockefeller Brother’s Fund
This Spring and Summer ID Studio collaborates with Folklore Urbano and serves as Fiscal Sponsor to develop and produce a musical performance for the 200th anniversary of Washington Irving's Tales of Sleepy Hollow based on the Unspoken Tales of recent immigrants in Sleepy Hollow. Performers from Folklore Urbano, Pajarillo Pinta'o, and ID Studio completed a successful residency and pilot performance at The Pocantico Center in the last week of February. Performances will be held on August 4 at Kykuit, Pocantico Hills, NY, and on the weekend of October 8-11, 2020, in Sleepy Hollow. This project seeks to uplift immigrant voices, narratives and creative traditions and is made possible through a generous 70,000 grant from the Rockefeller Brother's Fund.

NEA Grant
This summer, ID Studio will offer the third year of our annual bilingual summer arts intensive for South Bronx kids "Taller de Sueños / Workshop of Dreams." "Taller de Sueños," funded in part by a third year NEA Challenge America grant and foundation support, provides an invaluable opportunity for South Bronx youth to explore and train with top-level artists in dance, music, and theater and to ultimately co-create and star in an original production performed for the community. Through interconnected workshops in art, dance, music, and theater, “Workshop of Dreams” will activate participants' imaginations and empower kids to engage creatively and critically with their environments.
The NEA has again approved a grant of $10,000 to bring acclaimed Colombian actor and director, Nelson Celis (Director of the National Company for the Arts in Bogotá, Colombia), to lead the program. Celis is a long-time collaborator of ID Studio, starring in and directing numerous plays at ID Studio. The project incorporates training by Pablo Mayor and Anna Povich (founders of leading Colombian music organization Folklore Urbano), Daniel Fetecua (artistic director of Pajarillo Pinta'o) and ID Studio Education Coordinator, Jamie Vanegas.

ID Studio will hold auditions for children ages 7-12 years old interested in our summer arts intensive "Taller de Sueños." Please contact Director Jamie Vanegas at info@idstudiotheater.org or at (929) 274-3065 for the audition times and information.
This summer's youth workshop program will offer training to kids in theater, dance and music drawing on Afro-Latino traditions, with the objective of preparing some of the summer participants to perform with adult actors in the fall. Kids from the community will be actively involved in every part of the process, using what they learn in the “Workshop of Dreams” to make sets, costumes, props, and art for the public, and preparing to perform the final piece alongside seasoned performers.
New Collaborations and Partnerships
Mosaic Fund Grant
ID Studio is the proud recipient of a substantial three-year (2020-2022) grant from the New York Community Trust's Mosaic Fund to support a long-term project in creating collaborations and partnerships with schools, mission-aligned arts organizations, immigrant rights and service organizations in the Bronx and beyond. The Mosaic Fund grant will also fund a local and tri-state tour of ID Studio plays from our repertory and support general operating costs.
This initiative builds on our deep experience creating theater with, by and for Latinx community members of all ages, by developing partnerships that will bring new audiences and workshop participants to ID Studio and bring ID Studio's productions and projects to new spaces. The project will work across three interconnected initiatives: touring, partnerships and working in South Bronx schools.

Consulting Hispanic Federation/ Communities of Color Nonprofit Stabilization Fund
With support from the Communities of Color Non-Profit Stabilization Fund through the Hispanic Federation, ID Studio is benefitting from the support of three consultants (Tim Lord, Co-Director of DreamYard, Robert Federico, Director of the Repertorio Español, and Michael Palma Mir to work on expanding our collaborations with schools, churches and community centers around the Bronx. We are excited to embark on this period of learning and expansion guided by leading professionals in their respective fields.

Su Casa - Cumbia for All
Many thanks to City Council member Fernando Cabrera, ID Studio has been asked once again to bring our program "Cumbia for all,” a city-funded music and dance residency, to the R.A.I.N. Tolentine Senior Center in the University Heights section of the Bronx. This work will culminate in a final program presentation by participants at the end of June.
20th Anniversary Celebration
ID Studio will celebrate its 20th Anniversary in 2021! We are preparing a series of performances of our core works from the past 20 years to bring on the road to Upstate New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and all five boroughs of New York City beginning in January 2021. El Cielo y El Dolor back in the U.S.
Artist-in-Residence Nelson Celis will be performing "El Cielo y el Dolor" ("Paradise and Pain" in English), a powerful one-person play about a trans woman who migrated from Colombia and tells her heart-wrenching story while working as a prostitute in Queens. Directed by Germán Jaramillo, with original music by Pablo Mayor and set, costume and lighting design by Lucia della Paolera, the play premiered at ID Studio in 2018. Since then, it has toured successfully in Colombia, Mexico and Europe. The play will be presented, in English and in Spanish, at a range of venues in NYC beginning in May 2020. Artistic Director Germán Jaramillo is acting the part of Casius in "La Paz Perpetua," a new play at the Repertorio Español (www.repertorio.nyc for tickets) until April 1st, when he will go to Mexico for two months to be part of a new film by our Board member Guita Schyfter based on a novel by Hugo Hiriart.
Community-Building Theater Workshops (CBTW)
ID Studio continues our long-standing intergenerational and bilingual Community Building Theater Workshops at ID Studio every Wednesday night from 6-8pm. These workshops build community by providing a platform and safe space to develop and showcase the artistic talent within our diverse Latinx community while building community power and encouraging intergenerational dialogue on pressing issues within our neighborhood.
